Jenaer Glas is considered among the finest consumer glassware in the world. Its mid century collection is a work of modern art, with some pieces displayed in renowned art museums. The story of its production begins back in 1886 in Jena, Germany with a man named Otto Schott. He was a chemist and glass engineer and he had the idea of creating glass items that would be consistent in their design. This might seem like a simple task to us today; but, at the end of the 19th century, most glass was created by hand as one-of-a-kind items.

At first Schott and his team created optical and thermometer glasses. A year later, they discovered how to make heat resistant glassware. Following the first World War, the company began producing household glass. Jars for canning were the first. Teapots and tea cups and cookware quickly followed. The Jenaer Glas trademark was started.

I love the look, feel, and design of anything make by this German glass company. You can still find pieces from the mid 20th century if you look hard enough. I have a wonderful collection to share in my shop. Be sure to browse through all the items. Easy to clean and heat resistant, they make a perfect addition to any kitchen table. Do not be fooled by their light weight. They are ready to serve up a cup of hot tea.

This tea set is the the one that museums often include as the best work of modern design by the Jenaer company. The set includes a teapot with its tea infuser and lid, sugar and creamer, 8 teacups with their fabulous high-lipped saucers. I love to brew blooming flower teas in this pot because it is so beautiful to watch through the glass. Every item in the set is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks. This would make a splendid wedding gift for the lover of modern design.

The tea cups measure 1 3/4 inches high and 3 1/2 inches in diameter

The saucer is 4 3/4 inches in diameter

The teapot measures 4 3/4 inches high and 9 1/2 inches across from spout to end of handle
